Hepatitis C is a viral disease characterized by inflammation of the liver. The condition can be acute or chronic; the body is able to completely kill the hepatitis C virus with the acute illness, but in people with chronic hepatitis C, the body is not able to completely get rid of the virus and they end up having a long-term liver infection. If treatment is recommended, it usually involves two different types of medications (peginterferon and ribavirin).
