Prior to using INCIVEK while breastfeeding, talk to your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits.

Can Breastfeeding Women Take INCIVEK?

INCIVEK® (telaprevir) is a prescription medicine approved to treat chronic hepatitis C in combination with other hepatitis C medications. At this time, it is not known if INCIVEK passes through breast milk in humans. The manufacturer recommends that women avoid taking this medication while nursing a child. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, talk with your healthcare provider before taking this drug.

More Information on INCIVEK and Breastfeeding

No studies have been done to see if INCIVEK passes through breast milk in humans. However, it has been shown to pass through the breast milk of rats, to the extent that the levels of the medicine found in the rat's breast milk were higher than those in the blood. In addition, baby rats that were fed breast milk that contained INCIVEK did not gain weight as well as baby rats that were fed normal breast milk. Weight gain returned to normal after the rats were weaned from the breast milk that contained the medicine.

The manufacturer recommends that women stop breastfeeding before starting INCIVEK treatment. Because of the potential effects of the medicine on a nursing infant, breastfeeding while taking this medicine is not recommended.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and INCIVEK use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
