When Will Generic Pegasys Be Available?

It is difficult to predict when generic Pegasys might become available. Previously, regulations did not allow generic biologic versions to be made. However, regulations are changing to allow generic manufacturers to create biologic products that are similar to ones already approved by the FDA.

Is Peginterferon Alfa-b 2a a Generic Pegasys?

No -- peginterferon alfa-2a is the active ingredient in Pegasys, but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."

The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
