Hepatitis C Home > Pegasys Dosage
The recommended dosage of Pegasys for treating hepatitis B or C will depend on several factors, such as your weight, your age, and how well your kidneys are functioning. This medicine comes as an injection that is given just under the skin (subcutaneously) once a week for 24 to 48 weeks. Make sure your healthcare provider teaches you exactly how to give the injections.
An Introduction to Dosing With PegasysThe dose of Pegasys® (peginterferon alfa-2a) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on several factors, such as:
- Your age
- Your weight (and height for children)
- How well you tolerate the medication
- How well your kidneys are functioning.
As always, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
Pegasys Dosage for Hepatitis CThe recommended Pegasys dose for treating hepatitis C in adults is 180 mcg each week for 24 or 48 weeks (depending on the type of hepatitis C), combined with ribavirin. For hepatitis C genotype 1 infection in adults, a hepatitis C protease inhibitor such as Incivek® or Victrelis® should also be added. If you cannot take ribavirin, the standard adult dosage is 180 mcg each week for 48 weeks, regardless of the type of hepatitis C. People who have HIV in addition to hepatitis C should use the medication for 48 weeks, regardless of which type of hepatitis C they have or whether they are also taking ribavirin.
For children, the healthcare provider will calculate an appropriate dosage based on the child's body surface area, which is calculated using both height and weight, combined with ribavirin capsules or liquid twice a day. The usual length of treatment is 48 weeks.
Your healthcare provider may recommend a lower dosage if you develop dangerous Pegasys side effects or if you have kidney problems.
