Hepatitis C Home > PegIntron Dosage
Your age, weight, and kidney function are just a few of the factors your healthcare provider will need to be aware of when determining your specific dose of PegIntron. This medication is more effective at treating hepatitis C when it is used in combination with ribavirin. PegIntron comes as an injection that is given just under the skin (subcutaneously).
An Introduction to Dosing With PegIntronThe dose of PegIntron® (peginterferon alfa-2b) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on several factors, such as:
- Your age
- Your weight (and height for children)
- How well you tolerate the medication
- How well your kidneys are functioning.
As always, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
For adults age 18 and older with genotype 1 infections, the recommended PegIntron dose for treating hepatitis C is 1.5 mcg per kg (about 0.68 mcg per pound) each week for 48 weeks, combined with ribavirin (Rebetol®) capsules taken twice a day. For adults with genotype 1 infections, PegIntron works even better when combined with both ribavirin and a hepatitis C protease inhibitor (like Incivek™ or Victrelis™), although such a combination is not appropriate for all individuals.
The dosage is the same for adults with genotype 2 or 3 infections, except the medications are taken for just 24 weeks. A longer treatment course (48 weeks) may be recommended for people who have already tried and failed other treatments, or various combinations of these treatments.
For adults who cannot take ribavirin, the recommended PegIntron dosage is 1 mcg per kg (about 0.45 mcg per pound) each week for a year.
