Pegasys Hepatitis C
People with chronic hepatitis C may benefit from Pegasys® (peginterferon alfa-2a). This prescription medicine is specifically designed to treat chronic hepatitis C in adults and children as young as five years old.
Most people who receive Pegasys for hepatitis C treatment will also be given ribavirin, as this drug helps improve the effectiveness of Pegasys. In addition, a hepatitis C protease inhibitor such as Incivek® or Victrelis® can be added to further improve the effectiveness. For Pegasys to be used alone for hepatitis C treatment, there must be a good reason why someone cannot or should not take ribavirin.
When treating hepatitis C, this drug works activating by the body's own response to viruses. It is given as a subcutaneous injection just under the skin once a week for 24 to 48 weeks.
