When Will Generic PegIntron Be Available? It is difficult to predict when generic PegIntron might become available. Previously, regulations did not allow generic biologic versions to be made. However, regulations are changing to allow generic manufacturers to create biologic products that are similar to ones already approved by the FDA.
Despite the changing regulations, it is unlikely that a generic PegIntron version will be available in the near future. PegIntron was approved in March 2011, and will likely be protected from generic competitions by patents for quite some time.
Is Peginterferon Alfa-2b a Generic PegIntron? No -- peginterferon alfa-2b is the active ingredient in PegIntron (as well as in Sylatron®, a melanoma medication), but it is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine.
In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer would make the product.
