PegIntron Uses

Is It Safe for Children to Use PegIntron?

PegIntron plus ribavirin is approved for children as young as three years old. However, some people are unable to tolerate ribavirin. In these situations where PegIntron is used alone, it is approved only for use in adults age 18 and older. This is probably because using this medicine alone has not been adequately studied in younger age groups. Talk with your child's healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using PegIntron in children.

Off-Label Uses for PegIntron

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this drug for something other than the treatment of hepatitis C. The active ingredient in PegIntron (peginterferon alfa-2b) is available as a different medication (Sylatron®) that is used to treat malignant melanoma.

The dosages used to treat hepatitis C are lower than the dosages used to treat melanoma. It is possible that PegIntron might be prescribed for treating malignant melanoma, although this is less likely now that Sylatron is available (Sylatron is a much newer drug, compared to PegIntron).
